On the last day of our anniversary getaway, Debbie and I came across a car show at a beach. It was evident that the owners had poured a lot of money and affection into these cars. Some cruised around with engines rumbling and hydraulics bouncing. Despite the beautiful paint jobs and detailed engravings, these cars seemed to stall out frequently.

After our walk, Debbie and I climbed into our gray nondescript minivan and drove three uneventful hours to return home. Our van has faithfully transported our family to many destinations over the past six years.

You probably know where I’m going with this comparison. In the end, Jesus does not say “Well done, good and flashy servant.” Nor does he say “Well done, good and fruitful servant.” The words we hear as we enter our heart’s delight are “Well done, my good and faithful servant.”

For many, that faithful service may be gray and nondescript. And that’s okay.
